Ras De Cymru

On the 30th June, Brock Duncombe-Rogers, Jake Martin, Charlie Fawke and Will Kemp all took part in the Ras de Cymru based at the University of Wales, Newport.  From the start the team performed well with Jake Martin riding himself into 7th position with an excellent prologue ride.  Most of the stages were based in the Brecon Beacons and stage 2 provided a sprint finish.  Will Kemp found himself in a good position only to regret going too early.  Charlie and Brock performed consistently well throughout the tour, particularly as they were two of the youngest riders by some way.  Charlie particularly performed well on the hilly stage 4 which included a 20 percent climb after the team trial in the morning.  Jake Martin was unfortunate to suffer from 2 punctures and a crash but rode aggressively throughout the race.  The juniors on the tour performed especially well as they were not able to take advantage of the descents due to their junior gears.  The team time trial was a particular success with strong riding from the whole team.  The final stage was an epic climb which took most riders between 15-20mins up Llangynidr mountain in strong wind and rain.

All the riders gained a huge amount in experience and certainly improved their climbing through this very competitive tour which was won by Mike Smith of Team Corley Cycles.  Will Kemp finished in 44th position after climbing well on the final mountain stage, Brock Duncombe-Rogers in 76th and after his technical problems Jake Martin finished in 78th.  This was the first 5 day stage race by the team and the first time in such a competitive 100 rider field.  The team will return next year with intentions of challenging for the win.  Big thanks must go to coach Dan Bennett for his support throughout the race, his experience from Progressive Cycle Coaching was invaluable.
